Interview with Ryan Colt Levy

As the film continues its theatrical run, we had the opportunity to speak with Ryan Colt Levy, the voice of Denji, about his role, the film’s impact, and Denji’s character development.

Q: What changes and evolutions do you think were present in Denji during the Reze Arc?

A: That’s a great question! My journey began with the manga, which I read toward the end of 2020. I quickly understood Denji’s character and the layers that creator Tatsuki Fujimoto infused into him. This film exposes those layers more than the first season did, revealing Denji’s innocence and depth. The positive feedback from fans shows that they’re recognizing these facets after watching the movie.

Q: How do you feel about the distinction between Denji’s thoughts and his actions?

A: Absolutely! Denji often internalizes his thoughts without vocalizing them. This reflects his struggles in expressing himself, especially under the influence of characters like Makima. His journey of self-discovery amidst chaotic stimulation truly resonates.

Q: How do you embody Denji’s unique mindset when performing?

A: Denji’s desire to be seen and valued resonates deeply with me. We all experience heartbreak and the quest for happiness. His resilience, even in the face of constant challenges, reflects a fundamental human quality that I connect with.

Q: How did the direction you received change from the first season to the movie?

A: Initially, Mike McFarlane directed the first season, providing subtle yet impactful guidance. Moving to the movie with directors Caitlin Glass and Shawn Gann, I had more freedom and trust in portraying Denji, which allowed for a richer performance.

Q: Did you envision Denji’s voice while reading the manga?

A: I felt a unique connection to Denji from the start. His voice emerged organically while I was reading, shaped by the story’s depth and energy.

Q: What differentiates Denji from the typical Shonen protagonist?

A: Denji truly reflects a complex period in our cultural landscape. His journey of survival resonates across generational lines, articulating feelings many people can relate to right now.

Q: What’s your personal background with anime and manga?

A: Growing up in the ’90s, I was exposed to anime through Ghibli films and series like Cowboy Bebop. It has always been a part of my culture, even if I didn’t consider myself a hardcore fan until Chainsaw Man.

Q: Are there genres you wish to explore more in voice acting?

A: I enjoy comedy! After working on serious projects like Chainsaw Man, I’d love to explore more silly and lighthearted roles.

Q: What are your thoughts on the trend of anime arcs being adapted into films?

A: It’s exciting! Films allow for a unique, high-quality viewing experience and have garnered significant audiences post-pandemic, showcasing the evolution of anime in modern cinema.
